about

In 1976, hot off of the sales of 1976’s “Crumbo!!!” album, Hempal Goozer III was asked to record another album for Quilt Records. Melvin R. Daniels, Quilt A&R man supreme, was all set to have Goozer work with a new blues band he discovered working in Lovelock, Nevada. The oddly named Impartial Blues Troupe arrived in the studio and immediately butted heads with Goozer. Guitarist Landley Anderson insisted that she used her wah-wah guitar effect on every song, and that it be featured prominently in the mix. Bassist Ted Filbert wanted a solo in every tune. Drummer Barnold Korkingham relied heavily on an ‘ice bell” cymbal. None of this would fly with Hempal Goozer III. Melvin R. Daniels kept insisting that it sounded great, and this was “…the new blues sound that the kids are all crazy about…Just trust me, Hempal.” At this time, Mrs. Helen Marf was the owner of Quilt Records. Hempal complained and that same night, the entire Impartial Blues Band perished from a motel fire at which they were staying, caused by an arsonist. Coincidence? Possibly. Their tracks ended up getting erased and only Hempal Goozer’s parts remained.
And so, it was released as such. “Takes Flight” ended up being well-received by music critics and sold well. Melvin R. Daniels was instructed to never have any more contact with Hempel Goozer III after that.
The Impartial Blues Troupe’s ashes were literally swept under the rug, as the police force never investigated it.
