about

in 1977, Melvin R. Daniels had the thought for Garth Dohlie to capitalize on the disco craze and record a single. Melvin had it set up for Garth to travel to Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany and record with Giorgio Moroder, but could not convince Garth to even leave Kansas, let alone the country. So Melvin packed up Quilt's mobile recording studio and pulled into Decatur, KS. The players had heard rumors of Decatur being haunted, so they got their parts down and headed back to California as fast as they could. Hundreds of both townspeople and travelers had disappeared there, or were found drained of blood on Dohlie's acreage. Garth was very apprehensive to record, but thought America could use a good, wholesome dance tune for "the young people of this great country" and it might make him enough money to buy a new Oldsmobile. Alas, the single was not well received in the larger metro areas of the country. It did do well, as a remix, in the clubs and record stores in Junction City, KS and quite a bit of radio play in central Romania, but Garth Dohlie would not participate in any promotion for the record, so after 5-6 months, the record quickly faded from the public eye in those places. Quilt Records tried to cash in and reinvent Garth Dohlie a few more times before his death in 1985, including new wave, heavy metal, and country singles. But the tried-and-true formula for Garth prevailed, even demanding a greatest hits album eventually.
