about

Claude “Cocodril” Landry was born in Pitkin, Louisiana in 1920. As a child, he would often spend his spare time at the home of Gus Narkin, a deaf railroad worker. Gus had a broken-down piano that he tinkered upon in the evenings and sitting right next to him would be a young “Cocodril” Landry. Ingesting every nuance and note the Mr. Narkin played, Landry later combined what he had learned from his mentor with his love of contemporary, avant-garde piano compositions.
As he got older, Landry played often in the bars in the surrounding area. The locals loved his new style of blues piano playing, although many small riots would break out at each performance. Word got out and Quilt Records eventually found Landry a home. Landry almost left for another label as he initially thought label-mate Seymour Ornate Jr. kept ignoring him when he would try to start conversations.
“Cocodril” Landry would like to dedicate this album to the memory of Gus Narkin, who sadly passed away at a performance of Landry’s at McGonigle’s Happy Times Pub– crushed during one of the riots. And yes, it was the exact same place that legendary piano player Jumbo Puny O’Dainty perished years ago.
