about

“Garth Dohlie’s Haunted Halloween Tales”

Original Liner Notes:

It’s that time of year! Halloween is a holiday near and dear to Garth Dohlie. Garth always loves to gather around the children and townsfolk of Norcatur, Kansas and spin yarns of spooky Halloween tales. With a twinkle in his old eyes, he tells stories of haunted mirrors, haunted cornfields, and other paranormal happenings on the Dohlie property. Surely compounding the scariness of the stories, the Dohlie property itself has been the site of many grisly events, including hundreds of drifters and townsfolk turning up dead in his fields and barns. So, we at Quit Records suggest that you to turn down the lights, cuddle up with your pet werewolf, and enjoy these haunted Halloween tales, as told by America’s #1 farmer, patriot, and storyteller – Garth Dohlie!

Re-Release Notes:

Garth Dohlie was very excited to get these stories on record. Melvin R. Daniels brought out his recording gear to the farm in Norcatur, Kansas. However, no musicians would go out to record there, as many in the past had disappeared after recording with Garth. Some of them were found half-eaten and drained of blood. A solution was had, though. Mr. Daniels just captured Garth Dohlie telling his stories and then would have the backing music recording elsewhere. He enlisted a mysterious musician named Lyle DerSvick, who may have been Quilt Records artist Luthor DeSchwick and/or Clyle Davenport under an assumed name. Garth was not too happy with the result. “What is all of this futuristic, robot hogwash music?”, he was quoted as saying upon first hearing the completed album.
The album sold moderately well, though, and inspired Garth to record a Christmas album, but on the condition that Miss Trinity Plortsmouth, the organist at the Norcatur, Kansas church was to play the backing music.
The track "Garth's Pumpkin Patch" is viewed by some music historians as an example of early proto-rap.

Included on this reissue is just the music tracks, minus Garth. These tapes were found in an underground cold storage facility in Kansas City, Missouri. We believe they hold up quite well, even without Garth.
