about

After tympani "Wunderkind" Helen Cleerson, at the old age of 11, joined the Okiboji Neighborhood Symphonic Band in Okiboji, Iowa, the gloves were off. She spent the next several years traveling from city to city, working with several symphonic bands that needed her touch with the tympani. After a 2 week fling with Mr. Walt Marf, they got married and she became exclusively known as Mrs. Helen Marf. In 1956, she dropped out of the music entertainment business for one year to find herself. The Marfs ended up living in a Beatnik commune in Fresno, California. Piano player Jumbo Puny O'Dainty ended up enlisting her to play on his album on Quilt Records, under his pseudonym of Tremendous Pete Petite. Apparently Jumbo was scouting the area for a publicity photo and ran into Walt Marf, who took Jumbo to Walt's favorite watering hole and introduced him to Mrs. Helen Marf. The album was a huge success, yet Mrs. Helen Marf once again dropped out of the music business. Life went on.
Jumbo Puny O'Dainty had passed away. In 1962 Quilt Records president Clancy Snarrup just happened to be in town (once again the Marfs were living in Fresno) and ran into Mrs. Helen Marf while she and Walt were cleaning out their garage. Mr. Snarrup noticed the vast array of tympani on the front of the garage and knew it could only belong to one person. He convinced Mrs. Helen Marf that the world was ready for a tympani solo record. 16 tracks were recorded. Here are the first 8 that were recorded. So grab a cup of coffee, some mallets, and a comfy chair, and enjoy this stunning collection of songs - all written and performed by Mrs. Helen Marf.
