about

In 1968 - 1970, Quilt Records made a brief foray into the movie production business. Quilt president Clancy Snarrup saw a couple of low-budget movies and thought, "Hey, we could make a killing making this junk!" And thus, Quilt Movie Production was born. Specializing in comedy movies with apes and monkeys, almost every movie made Snarrup a healthy profit. During a trip out of town to Las Vegas with Quilt's longtime secretary, Lorraine Cronk, Snarrup's car broke down in the small desert community of Consumption Ridge on the way there. Using a pay phone to have Quilt Records talent scout and producer Melvin R. Daniels help them out, a gang of Hell's Angels drove by and started to cause some trouble with Snarrup and Ms. Cronk. Snarrup layed on the charm and befriended the gang. By the time Melvin R. Daniels arrived, Snarrup and Cronk were hanging out playing pool and drinking with the gang and he had the idea to make a biker exploitation film. Plus, several members of the gang were already in a band, "Rodney Scab and the First Triumvirate +2", and volunteered to record music for the soundtrack.
And so, "Boss Mephistopheles" was born. A story about a biker, Spider Paul, who releases a magic genie after rubbing an old motorcycle gas tank in a junkyard. Granting him 10 wishes, Spider Paul finds that all is not right. He feels his soul leaving his body after the first few wishes and discovers that the genie is actually the demon Mephistopheles. The story takes a wild turn as Spider Paul is okay with that and the demon tries to get away from Spider Paul's control. Of course, there is a Quilt Movie Production's trademark gorilla scene.
So sit back and enjoy this soundtrack to a biker movie, recorded by an actual biker gang band. Even Quilt Records star, Mrs. Helen Marf, makes an appearance, due to her being friends with several of the gang members, on "Freak Out". Sadly, the soundtrack has never been available until this time. The man behind the Dumpster Lads collection, Fletcher Munson, has once again worked his magic to restore the fidelity to the heavily damaged, original tapes. The movie ended up making Snarrup a hefty profit and is still shown at art house theaters to this day, as part of "cult movie" nights.
